pTunes: Engadget Pete starts a record label

Everyone can agree that the business of music has been melted down and is currently undergoing a significant reshaping by internet hands (think of it as cheese), and now it Peter Rojas is getting into the game.

Pete mentioned RCRD LBL on his blog this past Monday, following the New York Post’s report on the new venture with Downtown Records.

I don’t think there’s a man who’s better suited to the task of changing the way music is produced and sold, particularly from the inside out. We’ll be watching RCRD LBL with prideful eyes as one of the blogosphere’s finest attempts a new tricki llusion.

Curse you and your infectious beats

Can Timbaland make a beat that I won’t fall victim to? Is Timberlake really this good, or is there some sort of parasite in my spinal fluid? What’s with all these Timber names anyway?

Why oh why am I cursed with loving all this music that makes beautiful women want desperately to dance, in spite of my own lack of moves?

Currently listening (round 19): My Love

Update: (round 46)

Rock and Roll Education with Secret Machines

Wyatt and I went to the Showbox last night to see Secret Machines. They put on a great show (as always) though this time they did something new that they’re calling, “…In The Round.” Instead of setting up on the traditional stage they put three platforms for each of the boys in the middle of the floor facing each other. The rigging then created a circle around these platforms, and the crowd surrounded this construct. The end result created a lot more surface area and brought those of us on the floor much closer to the band than normal.

I would’ve had photos of this killer setup, except for learning a bit about the band’s interesting recording policy. According to the staff at the door, audio and point & shoot cameras were allowed. Because my d50 has an, “adjustable lens,” it wasn’t allowed inside. The downside here is that I couldn’t get any shots, which at past shows have looked awesome courtesy of their lighting design. The upside is in talking with the Showbox staff I’ve learned that by calling the afternoon before the show I can get the skinny and arrive with acceptable gear.

Tonight the boys from Detroit are playing at Neumo’s, so we’ll see what the newer, better-informed me can accomplish.

Coming Zune

The song in this new Zune ad is fantastic. I think their marketing direction here is both extremely attractive and a great way to differentiate from Apple.

Getting back in the game

Work has been swallowing the lion share of my time over the past couple weeks. We’re working on a major update for 10 that should hit the street soon. It’s very exciting, as this new iteration of the site will feature more writing and video on my part (about time after my introduction).

When I haven’t been trying to tame the mechanical bull that is my job description, I’ve been trimming my waistline in the gym. Over time it has become clear to me that selfishness is a motivator like no other, and so the desire to fit into a one-piece leather jumpsuit has pushed quite effectively.

Speaking of motorbikes, Dusty and I will be departing directly from the Stanford mall next Sunday to experience the glory that is Moto GP. I’ll be packing a shiny new lens for my D50, so my pictures this time round stand to be significantly better than last years photos.

Yesterday Slate published a great article about the production of Miami Vice, which illuminates some of the absurd lengths Michael Mann goes to in order to entertain us. Any of you who are in the valley on August 6th drop a comment, because I’ll be fighting jetlag and anything else that stands in my way to see it as soon as I’m back from Europe.

Finally, the most unfortunately valuable woman in radio Terry Gross managed to get Thom Yorke on Fresh Air. It’s certainly worth a listen, as Thom’s public interviews are few and far between.
